At the movies

  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Thought provoking premise for a film in the genre of 'Forrest Gump'. The make up and CGI is amazing, as are the performance, and the story just rambles but still manages to engage.
  • The Wrestler (2008)
How did you know I'd love this film? Moving, compelling, distressing, and now life imitates art imitating life as Randy the Ram gets a slot on Wrestlemania in March.
  • Frost/Nixon (2008)
Riveting film that transforms a simple interview into a boxing match between two prize fighters at the top of their games. Not a dull moment in spite of the dull subject matter.
  • Gran Torino (2008)
Great performance by Clint Eastwood with a story that moves the heart and avoids the expected cliches to great effect.
  • Slumdog Millionaire
An absolutely excellent film by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) that uses a unique premise to give us a no-hold-barred look into real life in present day India. Shocking at times, but overall heartwarming. A must see.
  • Iron Man (2008)
Sensational superhero movie with just the right mix of humour, action, special effects and yet another totally unbelievable plot presented so well you willingly suspend disbelief.
  • Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
An outrageously implausible plot handled superbly and transformed into a wonderful movie about pure love.
  • No Country for Old Men (2007)
Great performances, great direction and possibly the most sinister movie villain of all time. A gritty crime tale of suspense and violence with well-written characters and real, non-Hollywoodified situations.
  • Enchanted (2007)
The perfect film to take the kids to that the adults will enjoy too... perhaps even more! This tale of animated characters crossing over into the real world great return-to-form for Disney and so chockful of injokes you'll have to see it twice!

Fism2009logo_2

Announcement on the decided venue of FISM WCM2009 Beijing

Dear magic friends and magic lovers,

FISM World Championship of Magic 2009, to be held from July 26th to 31st, 2009 in Beijing has been under intense preparation. As part of that preparation we have continued to look for a venue that will offer everything anyone attending would love to have available. We believe we have finally found the best location for YOU. The China National Convention Center.

Although the firstly proposed venue National Grand Theater is spectacular and fully integrated with facilities, the theater, dealer’s room and lecture room are separate and far away from each other. It is inconvenient for close supervision during the convention. There is no hotel nearby so that participants have to take bus or subway to the venue. Besides, lack of catering utilities in National Grand Theatre also brings much inconvenience to participants.

With suggestions by experts of magic circle and all-around inspection by the Organizing Committee, we finally chose the China National Convention Center as the venue of FISM WCM2009 Beijing. The sole goal of the Organizing Committee is to ensure all the schedule of the magic convention to be carried out smoothly and guarantee all participants has a comfortable and convenient stay during the convention.

China National Convention Center with the investment of 5 billion RMB is the most advanced convention center in Asia. The center is located at the heart of Olympic Green, which is the fastest-developing district in Beijing and environmentally friendly, right next to the Bird Nest (Olympic main stadium in 2008), the Water Cube  (National Aquatics Center)and National Gymnasium. It is just 30 minutes to the airport by car. There is a subway station in front of the center and it only takes 20 minutes by subway to the center of Beijing city. The center is connected with one newly-built 4 star and one 5 star hotel. Within walking distance, there are also many hotels of different star.

China National Convention Center will provide the venues for competition, gala show, dealer fair, lecture and banquet. The more important is that it is favorable for close supervision. Besides, the center, which is also equipped with several restaurant and shopping center underground, brings much convenience to participants.

In the late January of 2008, through on-the-spot inspection, International President of FISM Mr. Eric Eswin and International Vice President Mr. Domenico Dante agreed that all-round circumstance of China National Convention Center can meet the FISM WCM’s requests.

The Organizing Committee of the 24th FISM WCM2009 formally announces here: FISM WCM2009 will be held from July 26th till and included 31st, 2009 at China National Convention Center.
