Nicholas J Johnson reminded me the other day that we'll have to make our annual visit to see SAW next week. "Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood!" Hmmm.. somehow I doubt that... especially when SAW VII is going to be in 3D.
However, it did prompt me to take a look and see what movies are coming up that I'm actually looking forward to...
OCT 29 will be a busy week with Michael Jackson's 'THIS IS IT' being the event movie of the year, 'THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR PARNASSUS' another Terry Gilliam massive hit or miss, and 'THE BOX'. A film with an intriguing premise: "A mysterious stranger, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world; someone they don't know.
NOV 5 sees Jim Carrey return in 'A CHRISTMAS CAROL'... but I do have the feeling Carrey ran out of gags a film or two ago... 'CASE 39' is at the other extreme and sounds interesting, and 'THE TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE' with Eric Bana is another film with an odd premise: "The story of a Chicago librarian who suffers from a rare disorder that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage." (Well duh!)
NOV 12 and it's '2012', another massive effects-based flick about the end of the world done only as Roland Emmerich does them, and 'THE BROTHERS BLOOM' looks like being a good old-fashioned con movie... with a twist!
NOV 26 'CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS', a huge box office hit in the USA, hits Australia but the trailers just don't appeal to me, instead I think it's 'NINJA ASSASSIN' for me! And who could resist Ricky Gervais in 'THE INVENTION OF LYING'.
DEC 10 is a dull movie week, but at least the awful 'JENNIFER'S BODY' provides us with another ridiculous plot line: "When small-town high school hottie Jennifer is possessed by a hungry demon, guys who never stood a chance with her, take on new luster in the light of Jennifer's insatiable appetite."
DEC 17 and there's only one movie released, 'AVATAR'. Everyone seems excited about this one from James Cameron but the trailer looks like an ad for a video game.
DEC 26 and it's holiday movie time with the kids flocking to 'ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS 2', 'SHERLOCK HOLMES' with Robert Downey Jr should be fun (the sequel is already being made), 'THE LOVELY BONES' looks like a fascinating film from Peter Jackson, but avoid 'OLD DOGS' like the plague!
2010 and here are a few to keep an eye out for
'CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT' which has some good reviews
'THE TOOTH FAIRY' starring The Rock and winning my award for most ridiculous premise of 2010: "A bad deed on the part of a tough minor-league hockey player results in an unusual sentence: He must serve one week as a real-life tooth fairy."
'NINE' a film that lovers of musicals are dying to see
'LAW ABIDING CITIZEN' for Gerad Butler fans
'SHUTTER ISLAND' with Martin Scorcese directing Leonardo DiCaprio
'ALICE IN WONDERLAND' Tim Burton directs Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter for Disney in 3D - hits on March 4
'THE SPY NEXT DOOR' with Jackie Chan and... Billy Ray Cyrus! (Jackie will be seen next in 'The Kung Fu Kid'... Will Smith's remake of 'The Karate Kid' starring Jaden Smith...)
'CLASH OF THE TITANS' - How hilarious!
'WALL STREET 2' - even funnier!
'IRON MAN 2' - Now we're talking! ('CAPTAIN AMERICA' comes in 2011, 'THOR' in 2011, 'IRON MAN 3' in 2012, 'NICK FURY' in 2012, 'ANT MAN' in 2012, and finally 'THE AVENGERS' in 2012. (2011 is very busy for Marvel with Spiderman 4, and X Men Origins movies for Magneto, Wolverine 2, and Deadpool)
'THE A TEAM' - Here's the cast: Faceman - Bradley Cooper (Steve in 'All About Steve'), Hannibal - Liam Neeson, Murdock - Sharlto Copley (Wikus in 'District 9'), B A Baracus - Quinton Jackson (UFC fighter). And still the 'I Dream of Jeannie' movie remains "in development".
'SHREK FOREVER AFTER' - where Shrek is duped by Rumpelstiltskin (Paul McCartney)
'TOY STORY 3' - Ken and Barbie join the toy team
'PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME' - Another video game adaptation
'CATS & DOGS 2: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE' - Finally!!!!
'THE EXPENDABLES' - Stallone directs the greatest action cast ever: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wow! I bet stuff will blow up.
'HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1'- It's nearly over.
'THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER' - Silver Chair still to come.
'THE GREEN HORNET' - with Seth Rogen
'THE GREEN LANTERN' - with Ryan Reynolds... can't they get proper actors to play super heroes anymore? And anyway, he's already playing 'Deadpool' in X Men Origins...
and on January 1, 2011 - 'THE SMURFS' (With John Lithgow... Poppa Smurf I assume)
